Solar Hot Water Heater
A solar hot water heater heats your showers and your dishwasher with roof collectors instead of burning gas all day, and water is the easiest thing in a house to store heat in. Most of our solar water heater installation work here is a pair of glazed flat plate collectors on a south-facing roof plane, a pumped glycol loop, and an eighty gallon storage tank with a backup element for the run of gray, rainy days we get.

The piece that gets skipped is the tempering valve. Skip it and that tank will run scalding on a clear afternoon, and somebody gets burned at the kitchen sink. We fit one, pressure test the loop, and purge the air before it ever runs.
Passive Solar Hot Water Heater
A passive solar hot water heater has no pump, no controller and no electronics to quit on you, which is why people ask for one by name. Water moves because hot water rises, so the storage tank has to sit above the collector, usually a batch unit on the roof holding thirty or forty gallons. Full, that's three or four hundred pounds sitting on your framing, and it's the first thing I look at.
If the rafters won't carry it, we sister them or we find another spot.
What bites a badly done passive setup around here is a hard freeze overnight. Bare copper on the roof with no freeze protection splits, and you learn about it when the ceiling starts staining. On a solar water heater installation like this, the cost follows the framing work, the pipe route down to your existing tank, and collector size.
Solar Pool Heater Installation
Solar pool heater installation is the cheapest heat you'll ever buy, mostly because your pool has low standards. It doesn't want 140 degrees, it wants 84, and black polymer mats on a south-facing roof will hold that from April well into October.
We size the collector area at roughly half to three quarters of your pool's surface, tie it into the return side of your filter pump with a three-way diverter valve, and set an automatic vacuum relief at the high point so the mats drain back when the pump shuts down. Leave that valve off and the first real cold snap splits the headers wide open.
There's no tank and no glycol loop here, which makes it a simpler animal than a passive solar hot water heater. Distance from the equipment pad to the roof, the pitch, and whether your pump has the head to climb a story are what change the quote.
Solar Thermal Water Heater
A solar thermal water heater doesn't make electricity, it makes hot water, and it's a simpler machine than people expect. We set collectors on the south-facing slope, run an insulated loop down to a storage tank in the garage or basement, and a small pump moves fluid whenever the panel is hotter than the water. Flat plate collectors suit most houses here, with glycol in the loop so a January cold snap can't split a copper riser.
The failures I see on somebody else's solar water heater installation are dull ones: air trapped at the high point so the pump starves, an expansion tank sized for the storage and not the loop, and no mixing valve, which means a clear afternoon hands you scalding water at the tap. Distance from collector to tank, and whether your existing tank stays, moves the price more than anything.
Solar Tankless Water Heater
A solar tankless water heater is two appliances behaving as one: the collectors feed a solar storage tank, and the on-demand unit downstream only fires when the sun hasn't finished the job. Through a Birmingham summer, it barely lights at all.
Where this goes sideways is the inlet. Plenty of tankless units aren't rated to take preheated water. They see warm water arriving, fall below their firing point and quit halfway through your shower. What we won't do is hang one of those off a solar tank. We spec a unit built for preheated supply and set a thermostatic tempering valve ahead of it so the burner gets a steady inlet temperature every time.
Gas sizing matters too. A 3/4 inch run that happily fed an old 50 gallon tank often can't carry a high-fire tankless burner, and that upsizing is one of the things that moves what a solar water heater installation runs.
Solar Assisted Heat Pump Water Heater
A solar assisted heat pump water heater is the hybrid of the bunch: your collectors do the heavy lifting when the sun is out, and a heat pump pulls warmth out of the air around the tank the rest of the time. We set these in garages and basements, because the unit needs room to breathe and warm air to breathe.
Stuff one into a coat closet and it smothers itself, falls back on the electric elements, and your bill reads the same as it always did.
So this kind of solar water heater installation is half plumbing and half airflow. We measure the air volume in the space, run a proper condensate line to a drain rather than parking a pan under it, and size the collector array to how much hot water you actually burn through. In a muggy Birmingham garage, the side effect is drier air all summer.
What the job involves

What it costs
What moves the price on a solar water heater installation is mostly three things: how many collectors your household's hot water actually calls for, how far the copper has to travel from the roof down to wherever the tank sits, and whether your existing tank can stay on as a preheat vessel or needs replacing with a dual-coil one.
Two collectors feeding a new tank in a crawlspace on the opposite corner of the house runs well above one panel sitting more or less over the utility closet. Same hardware, more pipe and more hours.
Roof age counts too. If your shingles are close to done, mounting into them means paying twice.
The bids that come in low tend to skip insulation on the exterior run and skimp on freeze protection, and one hard January night here will crack a collector open.

When solar water heater installation is the wrong fix
Sometimes solar water heater installation is the wrong call, and I would rather say that standing in your yard than after the check clears. Collectors want real midday sun. If your roof sits under a stand of old oaks, that tank leans on its backup element most of the year and you have paid for plumbing that never pays you back.
Where the shade is on the house but the driveway is wide open, a solar carport can carry the panels instead, or we look at a straight home solar installation on whatever slope actually gets sun.
Already have an array up there and your bill jumped anyway? That is solar panel repair, not a second system bolted next to the first.
And if the real complaint is breakers tripping when the dryer and the AC run together, what you need is an electrical panel upgrade. Hot water off the roof does nothing for that.

Will the roof mounts leak?
Not when they're flashed properly. Every penetration gets flashed and sealed into the roof itself, never just caulked over the top. Caulk on its own buys you two or three years before a brown ring turns up on somebody's ceiling.
What happens during a week of gray, cold rain?
The backup element on the tank covers it. Solar carries most of the load here from March through October, and in the cold weeks it preheats the water so the backup only lifts the last few degrees.
